A Few Words About the Covid-19 Virus

March12, 2020

Dear Patients, Family and Friends,

With the president’s announcement last night March 11, 2020 regarding the WHO’s upgrading the Corona virus to pandemic status worldwide I wanted to extend thoughts that may help all of us understand the best practice for avoiding and preventing becoming infected.

Firstly, please understand that every year during the late fall into early spring we are at risk for contracting community acquired viruses. The flu is an example of a community acquired virus

Currently the Infections rate

COVID-19: Approximately 121,564 cases worldwide; 1,050 cases in the U.S. as of Mar. 11, 2020.

Flu: Estimated 1 billion cases worldwide; 9.3 million to 45 million cases in the U.S. per year.

Currently the Deaths

COVID-19: Approximately 4,373 deaths reported worldwide; 29 deaths in the U.S., as of Mar. 11, 2020.

Flu: 291,000 to 646,000 deaths worldwide; 12,000 to 61,000 deaths in the U.S. per year. Thus far in the 2019-20 flu season, the US CDC has reported 2,900 influenza-associated deaths.

Currently there are a significant number of people suffering and dying from contracting the flu worldwide and locally here in the US versus the COVID-19 (Corona virus). The major difference at this time between flu and corona virus appears to be the marked decrease ability to breath or difficulty breathing.

At this time there is no vaccine and therefore your best defense is the following:

· Wash your hands multiple times per day and when doing so use warm water and soap. You should sing the alphabet song to your self to ensure you are washing your hands for a long enough period of time to remove possible contamination.

· Clean surfaces such as, door knobs, counters, office phones, coffee pot handles. All surfaces commonly and frequently touched by multiple people either in your work environment or home

· Stop eating sugar… Seriously. We have known for a long time that sugar feeds infections and cancers. At this critical time, we cannot afford to weaken our immune system and harm our white blood cells. I would suggest discontinuing sugar for a minimum of 30 days or until it has been reported that COVID-19 is under control. The healthier you eat the healthier your immune system will be.

· Stay hydrated – water oxygenates your blood and helps to flush toxins, helps your lymphatic system remove debris, and circulate white blood cells, maintains your mucus membranes (eyes and mouth) which can be first line of protection.

· Stay away from unnecessary public places including restaurants.

· Avoid shaking hands

· Cover sneezes and coughs and walk away from others who are coughing and sneezing

· Stay home if your unwell and call the office for an appointment as soon as possible so that we can help you support your immune system. It is the correct time of year to suffer from a viral infection and it is also allergy season. Let’s find out which one and help you get well and be well

This virus COVID-19 is currently the hot topic in the media and in public. Per the US government every available resource is concentrating to understand and combat this virus as quickly as possible, but it will take time. Until then, we can as individual, help stop the spread of COVID-19 by being proactive.

If you have further questions please do not hesitate to contact the office.
